ABOUT DESTINY MIDDLE SCHOOL

Destiny Middle School (DMS) is Green Dot Washington’s flagship campus located in Tacoma’s vibrant Eastside neighborhood. Destiny first opened its doors in August 2015 with a founding class of 6th grade students. Since then, Destiny has grown to a comprehensive middle school serving students in grades 6-8. OPPORTUNITY:

We are seeking a mission aligned Middle School Counselor (grades 6-8) to join the team at Destiny Middle School. Counselors at Green Dot are responsible for providing counseling and guidance services to all students, with an emphasis on preparing students for college. This includes conducting individual and small group counseling sessions for students in need. Expertise with prevention, intervention, developmental and crisis counseling experience is highly desired. Our ideal candidate is hard-working, entrepreneurial, and possesses a strong desire to foster high levels of academic achievement with academically underserved students. We are looking for a School Counselor who is passionate about high school and excited to become a founding member of a new school community.

Green Dot Counselors are committed to continuing their own learning and refining their practice to stay current in the field, ensuring a quality education for all.  We offer twice-weekly professional development and specialized cross-network professional development days; regular observations, coaching and feedback; summer training; and various opportunities for teachers to attend professional development conferences. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote a college going culture through various activities on and off campus
  • Conduct conflict mediation program and promote safety for all students
  • Coordinate and implement dissemination of information to students, parents, and community members pertaining to the college knowledge and college readiness
  • Implement the middle and high school guidance curriculum through delivery of classroom units
  • Guide individuals and groups of students through the development of educational and career plans
  • Counsel individuals and small groups of students toward social and emotional and academic growth
  • Provides direct support service to individual students, small groups, and classroom
  • Provide counseling to students to promote ready to learn skills
  • Complete assessments, referrals, and counseling with students and families
  • Develops and maintains family outreach programs and community partnerships
  • Provide effective counseling strategies to students to replace negative behavior with appropriate behavior
  • Maintain student records to ensure students are appropriately placed in academic classes
  • Coordinate visits by college representatives during the school day
  • Organize and implement field trips to promote college awareness
  • Provide necessary information and materials for students regarding PSAT, SAT and/ or ACT Aspire and interpret results to students, parents, and staff
  • Support the school advisory program as a level 1 intervention to address barriers to learning, cultivating a college going culture and promoting leadership and life skills
  • Offer student and parent workshops to provide information and assistance in preparing for college and beyond
  • Participate in, coordinate and conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the counseling program and school
  • Provide individual and small group counseling to students with IEP counseling needs > Work collaboratively with School’s SIT, School Psychologist and other academic and mental health support personnel to ensure student success
  • Conduct parent conferences to discuss student academic progress
  • Maintain work hours extending beyond school hours for other professional duties or functions such as staff meetings, etc.
  • Maintain professional standards and school environment that is productive, safe and focused
  • Participate in Green Dot and individual professional development
  • Participate in other events aimed at promoting or developing Green Dot Rainier Valley High School (i.e., student recruitment)


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (required)
  • Valid Washington State School Counselor Credential (required)
  • MA/MS Degree in School Counseling (highly preferred)
  • Experience with individual and group counseling
  • A passion for improving urban middle and high schools and driving education reform
  • Experience working in an urban school setting (highly preferred)
  • Prior counseling experience (mental health), including DIS Counseling
  • Proven management and team building skills
  • Ability to understand student maturity levels and the process of goal selection
  • Ability to help students gain an awareness of interests and abilities and to help them make course choices that will lead to appropriate careers commensurate with interests and abilities
  • Ability to understand test construction and interpret educational test data
  • Ability to motivate students and provide academic incentives for success
  • Excellent collaborative and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

COMPENSATION:

Compensation for this role ranges from  $46,000 - $80,000 and is based on education and experience. In addition, we offer a comprehensive benefits plan as well as the opportunity to impact a growing, mission-driven organization that is committed to the success of students in Seattle, Kent and Seattle.
