Policy and Advocacy

We are a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization whose mission is to advance charter public schools by developing talented educators and fostering choice and access to quality education. We also provide legal support to member schools and advocate for them when access to charter public schools is at risk.

We’re especially committed to protecting the intent of the charter school law that voters enacted in 2012, giving schools increased autonomy and flexibility in exchange for heightened accountability. We’re making a measurable difference for all Washington state students, with a focus on those who academically and economically disadvantaged, and we will protect that success any way we can.

In collaboration with our local and national advocacy partners, we’re:

  • Educating policymakers and the public about charter schools—foremost, that charter schools are public schools
  • Providing guidance to the Washington State Charter School Commission, the Washington State Board of Education, and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction
  • Anticipating, identifying, researching and analyzing legal and policy issues that could impact the authorization and operation of high-performing public charter schools across Washington state
  • Growing our relationships with legislators, policymakers, advocacy partners, educators, parents and communities to ensure state policies and laws continue to support the high-performing public charter schools.

Act Now for WA Students

When the state Supreme Court threatened the future of charter public schools, we partnered with parents, students, educators and activists to launch the Act Now for WA Students campaign to convince Washington’s state legislators to keep the schools open and funded.
