SPOKANE, Wash. — On Saturday, Lumen High School hosted its third-ever graduation ceremony.

The school, which is located in downtown Spokane, provides wrap-around support to help teen parents get a high school education while balancing parenthood.

On Saturday, eight students received their diplomas and were met with love and support from each other, their families and the school’s staff.

While students are enrolled, they have access to mental health counseling, a medical clinic, diapers, formula or anything they might need to succeed not just as a student, but also as a parent.

“At graduation, we’re really celebrating an up because we know that graduation and getting that diplomas, unlocking doors to their future [is] not only for themselves, but also for their children,” Melissa Pettey, principal at Lumen High School, said. “It’s just proven that students who make that decision are there. Their children are more likely to follow in their footsteps to get their diploma and go on to what’s next.”

The high school has an open enrollment and says it’s always looking for new students.
