For Aubrie, senior year has meant navigating one of the biggest transitions of her life while staying focused on the future she’s building for herself and her family. Funny, motivated, and grounded in her relationships with friends and family, Aubrie found her way to Lumen at a pivotal moment. “I chose to go to Lumen because during my senior year of high school I found out I was pregnant and I wanted to be at a place where I had more support with my situation, school, and preparing my future education,” she says.
Support That Made the Difference
Aubrie is candid that high school hasn’t always been easy — but says her experience improved significantly after the switch to Lumen. “Finding out I was pregnant was definitely the hardest moment of high school, but all of the teachers at Lumen have helped and supported me throughout my pregnancy as well as my last year of school,” she says. She credits her school counselor, Katy, with helping her navigate the college process at a time she needed it most: “I definitely wouldn’t have been able to figure it all out without her.”
A Lifelong Athlete With Her Sights on Medicine
Before Lumen, Aubrie competed on varsity softball and in competitive cheer, building on years of cross country, track, volleyball, basketball, football, and gymnastics. Academically, her science classes sparked something that’s stuck with her: a passion for pursuing a career in the medical field. She also found purpose outside the classroom through regular volunteer trips to Second Harvest. “Those were probably one of my favorite days to come to school ‘cus I really enjoyed helping out,” she says.
Growing Into Who She Is
Aubrie says she’s changed in nearly every way since freshman year — her friendships, her style, and most of all, her priorities. “My priorities are a lot more of my future and my baby, and freshman year my only priority was hanging out with friends and going to practice,” she says. She’s learned to stop trying to fit in and start finding people who fit her: “You just need to find the group of people who match your personality and lifestyle, because they are a lot more comfortable to be around.” Asked to sum up her senior year in one word, she chose “emotional” — a reflection of a year defined by real challenges and real growth.
This fall, Aubrie heads to Eastern Washington University to study nursing, with her baby due in August. Congratulations, Aubrie — we can’t wait to see everything you build for your family and your future!
