Alumni Advocacy Award Recipient — Rochelle

Congratulations to charter public school alum Rochelle, who in October 2025 received the Outstanding Alumni Advocacy Award from WA Charters. These annual awards offer an opportunity to shine a light on the incredible parents, students, alumni, and leaders in our community who play an instrumental role in advocating for equitable public education.

Rochelle was a founding student at Why Not You Academy in Des Moines, where she graduated as valedictorian this past summer. She thrived in the school’s smaller environment—one that allowed her to feel comfortable, confident, and supported. Through Why Not You’s Leaving to Learn program, she explored her growing interest in law by connecting with local attorneys and law offices.

As a student advocate, Rochelle participated in workgroups to help shape the updated statewide High School and Beyond Plan, testified before the Senate Early Learning and K–12 Education Committee, and met with legislators to share her story and emphasize the importance of charter public schools.

Rochelle’s favorite quote comes from Katherine Drexel: “Press forward, fear nothing.

We are proud to recognize Rochelle’s leadership, determination, and commitment to educational equity with this award.
