Today, the United States Supreme Court upheld the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s ruling, which prohibits the formation of religious charter schools. It was a major relief for public charter schools nationwide. This decision upholds the integrity of our public education system—preserving the constitutional separation of church and state, protecting funding for Washington’s 17 charter public schools, and ensuring millions of students across the country in these unique public schools can continue to access a high-quality, tuition-free public education, with the full civil rights protections and accountability standards guaranteed by the law.
The fight isn’t over, but the foundational principles of public education and what it should offer to for all students remains strong. As new challenges come our way, we’ll keep standing up for what we believe: that public schools should be accessible to serve every student, now and for generations to come.
