Safe Spaces for All Students
At WA Charters, we stand with public schools and will fight attempts to undermine them. The only projects that WA Charters supports are those that seek to expand access to public education, invest in public schools and teachers, give parents new options for tuition-free, non-sectarian public schools, and that prepare Washington’s students for the diversity of the world and its people. Washington state’s charter public schools provide a free, inclusive, and safe learning environment for all students. They prioritize both physical and emotional safety while respecting diverse perspectives and delivering excellent academic outcomes. Every student is welcome, regardless of immigration status, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, gender expression, LGBTQIA+ identity, or disability.
WA Charters works with charter public schools statewide and a broad coalition of public education and community advocates to uphold and protect students’ rights. As a Washington public school organization, we are committed to working alongside the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction to defend our state’s education laws to the fullest extent.
To support this commitment, we provide access here to resources to help schools address the needs of their communities related to immigration, including the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, protections for LGBTQIA+ youth, and ways to protect other civil rights at public schools.
“At WA Charters, we stand with public schools and will fight attempts to undermine them. During last year’s election, the blueprint laid out in the so-called Project 2025 included taking resources away from public schools. The only projects that WA Charters supports are those that seek to expand access to public education, invest in public schools and teachers, give parents new options for tuition-free, non-sectarian public schools, and that prepare Washington’s students for the diversity of the world and its people.”—Chris Korsmo, Executive Director, Washington Charter Schools Association
