Hello! My name is Khi’lani.
I joined this program to learn more about policy and how to effectively advocate for what is right. I want to make a meaningful difference not only in my own life, but also in the lives of others around me. This internship is an exciting opportunity for me because it allows me to step outside of my comfort zone, travel to the capital, meet new people, and gain real-world experience. I am especially looking forward to expanding my education by actively engaging in advocacy and seeing firsthand how change can happen through policy and leadership.
To me, communication is more than just talking to people; it is about building genuine connections and understanding different perspectives. Strong communication skills allow me to express my ideas clearly while also listening and learning from others. This is especially important when it comes to networking, because forming relationships can open doors to future opportunities such as jobs, mentorships, and personal growth. Communication can also inspire new ideas, passions, and goals that I may not have discovered on my own.
Advocacy, in my view, means standing up for yourself and others and confidently expressing your needs and beliefs. It is about using your voice to create change, even when it feels difficult. Throughout history, advocacy has played a powerful role in shaping society. For example, women fought for the right to vote, and people of color fought and continue to fight for equal rights and fair treatment. These movements show how impactful it can be when individuals come together to demand justice. On a personal level, advocacy is important to me as a student, especially when it comes to fighting for access to quality education and the funding needed to support it.
Policy is just as important because it is what turns ideas into action. While advocacy raises awareness and pushes for change, policy is what actually creates that change by shaping laws and systems. Policymakers have the responsibility of deciding which bills become law and how resources are distributed, which can directly impact communities and individuals. Understanding policy will help me become a stronger advocate because I will not only be able to speak up, but also understand how decisions are made and how to influence them.
In the real world, I plan to use these skills by speaking up whenever I feel something is wrong and standing firm in my beliefs. I want to continue advocating for myself and others, especially in spaces where voices like mine may not always be heard. Communication will help me build connections, discover new opportunities, and grow both personally and professionally. Whether it leads to a job, new knowledge, or a passion I haven’t yet explored, I know these skills will play a major role in shaping my future.
Overall, this experience is an important step in my journey toward becoming a confident advocate, an effective communicator, and someone who wants to work to create positive changes in the world.
